About this place
Picking up a tray and scanning the shelves and chilled glass cases full of small dishes to match the day's mood is the core ritual at MARUSOU. Located under the elevated tracks in Shin-Kiba Station's Metro Center shopping arcade, this cafeteria-style diner offers the relaxed freedom of choosing each dish individually.
Fish anchors the main courses, with a broad rotation of grilled and simmered specialties. Reasonably priced salmon collar and yellowtail collar sit alongside rich, fatty Greenland turbot teriyaki and sweet miso-marinated black cod, all primed to pair with rice. Meat selections are equally homely, spanning classic nikujaga beef stew, breaded tonkatsu, and hamburger steaks, making it easy to double up on mains when hunger calls.
With a centerpiece decided, side dishes round out the tray. The selection runs to unpretentious comfort: broth-soaked agedashi tofu, chilled fried eggplant, classic macaroni salad, fresh tofu, natto, or a fried egg. Dishes from the shelves can be warmed in the microwave on request, and pairing them with a piping bowl of miso soup and rice—portioned small, medium, or large at the counter—yields an instant, customized set meal.
Beyond a satisfying daytime meal, MARUSOU easily shifts into an evening izakaya stop, where regulars graze on small plates over cold beer, sour cocktails, or sake. For travelers transferring through Shin-Kiba or commuters heading home from work, it remains a dependable fixture for straightforward dining.
